Below are some examples of gorgeous floral plates from the 1833 book: “Choix des plus belles fleurs et des plus beaux fruits par P.J. Redouté”.
Pierre-Jospeh Redouté was a Belgian painter, nicknamed “the Raphael of flowers”. Wikipedia says about him:
He was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and he continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. Redouté survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants, which remain as fresh in the early 21st century as when first painted.
Click on book title or the illustration below, and your browser will open the Open Library viewer:
Notice the hand tool, where you can flip through the other pages of the book, and the zoom tool. The zoom tool is essential if you want to download high quality versions of the images. The above view is TWO images. This is how you download the left image:
- Zoom in on the left image as close as it gets (this is not a comfortable view on my screen!)
- Right click on the image and choose download.
If you don’t zoom in as close as possible, you will have only half the size on the download, or even smaller!
Here are a few of my favorite images from the book, for you to get a feeling of what you will find, it has lots more 😀

Redouté was one remarkable artist! He is forever linked with depicting roses, but he also painted lots of other stunning florals and fruit 🙂
I hope you will feel inspired to go explore Open Library. There are millions of antique books to read and download from. Again, it takes patience, patience, patience to find the best treasures, unfortunately a lot of the books added early (more than 2 years ago) are microfilm or poor scans where the image quality is nothing much.
If you want a tested and recommended Open Library list to start out with, I have compiled one for myself, that I’m happy to share with you:
