 INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut out, paint & glitter your bookpages (how to do it HERE).
  2. Trim your pages to the same width.
  3. Measure the width of your pages and put a pencil mark in the middle, at the bottom edge.
  4. Cut the pages into triangles, using your pencil mark and the two top corners to guide you.
  5. (Optional: punch out shapes from the left over book page).
  6. Print out the Letter Template Sheet and cut the 6 letters apart.
  7. Use a needle of something sharp to pierce all the red dots.
  8. Place the letter on top of your book page flag and use a thin colored marker to mark the red dots through the letter template layer onto the flag layer.
  9. Use a needle or something sharp to pierce all the blue dots, through both layers (letter and flag).
  10. The red dots are guidelines to show you the symbols, they should all be covered with an X (one stitch).
  11. Embroider with floss or thin crochet thread.
  12. Feed the flags into the sewing machine to attatch the lace ribbon.
  13. (Optional: feed your punched shapes into the sewing machine too, then tie them onto the ribbon).
  14. Hang and TA-DAH: Vintage Embroidered Creativeness :-).

The embroidery template letters can be used several times, if you have a few extra pages you can make ART too:

DIY Old Book Crafts – No 1 – Heart Garland

During the summer vacation I have enjoyed working with old books. The paper texture is great and I love to upcycle 🙂

I went to the thrift store, bought a bag of old books for 50 kroner (approx $8 for 10 old books). They were not vintage or antique, but I picked the oldest books they had. I ended up with mainly books from the 50ies. So I did not feel bad at all cutting them apart…:-P

My first book project is this cute and versatile Heart Garland:

Does it not look pretty on my hallway shelf?

I started by cutting out book pages, and spreading them out. I then gessoed a page and quickly added a little acrylic color and a generous sprinkle of glitter, as you can see most of my pages were painted in shades of pink:

I’m trying to show you how they sparkle (they really do, a l-o-t, but for some reason my camera does not pick up on that very well…):

I then had lunch, came back and painted the flip sides too. I let them dry overnight, then punched out hearts with my Martha Stewart Heart Punch, I even collected the debris (will tell you in a later post what for!):

If you don’t have a heart punch, you can use most other punches you have available: how about a flower, star, or even plain circles or squares. You could also hand cut hearts or other shapes for this project.

I then thread my sewing machine with white on top and red underneath, this is a kewl trick to sew “bakers twine” style… and used the longest stitch setting for fast action…lol

Feed the hearts into the sewing machine, and in just a few minutes you have several meters of sparkling Heart Garland 🙂

Use the Heart Garland on shelves like I did, or as gift wrap ribbon, or hang them in a window to blow in the wind:

Summer Hacks

We are vacating!!! (<— Is that a word in English???) Anyways, we are enjoying time off from work, spending time on my sisters farm and in general just lazy days 🙂

On Sunday, my friend Susanne gave me a HUGE boquet of vintage garden roses! It was absolutely stunning. Unfortunaltely these old roses does not thrive well in water, so already on Tuesday most of them were no longer that pretty. Still a few were looking good, so here is what I did to keep them a little longer:

Wings of Whimsy: Rose Hack

Simply cut off the flowers you want to keep with a short stem, and put them in bowls of water. I also kept a few leaves for support and complimentary color.

We are having a veritable heat wave here in Western Norway, and our houses are not built for that. They are built to keep the heat IN during the cold winters… few houses have air conditioning and the solution is to open several windows to create an air flow throughout the house… However, on a farm that also means inviting the flies in…:-O So with some old lace curtains and some masking tape, I created temporary insect screens for the open windows:

Wings of Whimsy: Insect Screen Hack #diyAnd finally up at the mountain farm we we are residing ( I have blogged about it beforer HERE), the ground is n-o-t particularly plane… our favorite table is a camping type, were each leg can be adjusted individually, to always have a plane table regardless of where it stands.. Unfortunaltely, we have had that same table for over 40 years, and it has endured 2 generations of children, a few showers and reckless use… so the poor table top was totally broken. My solution: stapling a waxed table cloth to it 😀 It gives the old table another few seasons, and when this layer of table cloth is worn out, I’ll simply staple another layer on top again 😀

We will be up on the mountain farm with no power and no internet most of this week and next, so don’t expect many posts here during this time 😉
