I’m really getting deep into my image-research on European Royalty, and I’m having a blast! Today I’m sharing a supplement from the Frank Leslie’s newspaper, dated 14th of July 1877: This is queen Victoria with her (already) extensive family. The source also had the key to identify who is who, information like this proves invaluable for researching such a large family, scattered all across Europe:
And although I have found a couple of helpers for my Pretty Data project, I’m still hoping there will be others! I’ve started to divide my material into countires, although the European countries have also changed during the last 200-300 years… So here is a list I have made of the countries and their sovereigns in 1897 (the time of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee):
COUNTRY | Sovereing 1897 |
Austria-Hungary | Emperor Franz Joseph I |
Belgium | King Leopold II |
Bulgaria | Prince Ferdinand I |
Denmark | King Christian IX |
Germany | Emperor Wilhelm II |
Greece | King George I |
Italy | King Umberto I |
Liechtenstein | Prince Johann II |
Luxembourg | Grand Duke Adolf |
Monaco | Prince Albert |
Montenegro | Prince Nikola |
Netherlands | Queen Wilhelmina |
Portugal (republic from 1910) | King Carlos I |
Romania | King Carol I |
Russia | Emperor Nicholas II |
Serbia (Yugoslavia) | King Alexander I |
Spain | King Alfonso XIII |
Sweden & Norway | King Oscar II |
United Kingdom | Queen Victoria |
Β | Β |
OTHER COUNTRIES | Sovereign |
Norway (independent from 1905) | King Haakon VII |
France (last French emperor in 1870) | Napoleon III |
Albania (kingdom from 1928-1939) | Zog I |
If you read this and think: that is MY country, MY history and I’d like to know more about it too: don’t hesitate to contact me and join this project π I promise you will learn bunches, have fun, and get access to a unique collection of European Royal Imagery!!! And I’m confident there will be many unforgettable images and a couple of fabulous projects to share here on WoW as a result of this, but please forgive me for being a little absentminded while I work on the research π

Great idea! Can’t wait for some pretty photos! I can’t say that I know a lot about her but, Empress Elizabeth, known as ‘Sissi’ has a remarkable story!! (Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary)!!
I look forward to this!!!!! Thank you!!
Hiya Lindy π Would you like to have a go at the Austrian side of the family? I have already recorded some of the family into my genealogy-part of this research, but I need lots more pictures from that part π If you are interested, we would of course be working together and I have several leads for you to start with, so you will not be totally on your own…;-) Let me know what you think π xoxoxo
You’re amazing! A true scholar!
Hahaha, I had to google scholar, to make sure I know the proper meaning of the word, and I totally agree! I love both learning and studying, I hope I never cease to explore! The world is vast and so is history, and it’s all up for grabs, now that internet makes everything so easily accesable π My main issue is to limit myself… hehehe Thank you for the lovely compliment π xoxoxo
