Cherubs Labels Sheet

I came across some small antique Cherub die cuts, so I decided to multiply them onto a sheet:

Wings of Whimsy: Little Cherubs Label Sheet #vintage #valentine #ephemera #freebie #valentine #cherubs #labels

I printed mine on white cardstock and used them to label several binders, but these are also lovely for your scrapbook, or as small tags for the Valentine season (or any other Cherub season, – if you are anything like me!) 😀

Fred Spurgin Fairyland Cherubs ca 1921

Tonight I’m sharing a particularly precious set of Fairyland Cherubs, painted by Fred Spurgin:

I have found very little information about Fred Spurgin, but here is a quick resume of what I have been able to uncover (please note that this information is unverified):

Frederick Spurgin (born Izydor SPUNGIN) was born in Latvia in 1882, and emigrated to England (lived in Brixton) with his family about 1895. His father, Solomon was a watch and jewelry repairer. Fred had 3 brothers and 1 sister. Fred and his brother Maurice trained as artists and designers.

Fred married Lily Rothman (daughter of Louis Rothman – the founder of the famous cigarette company), but sadly she died in a railway accident when still quite young. He lived in Hampstead, north London in 1925. Fred Spurgin died in 1968.

Fred was an illustrator and a prolific postcard artist. He wrote several children’s books including The Merry Pickles (1932) and Pat and Peggy in the Air (1933). This set of Fairyland Cherubs is painted in a style quite different from the style Fred became most famous for, humoristic and patriotic World War I postcards.

I love the particular style of this set, and hope to discover more Spurgin pieces like these: bright, colorful, adorable and totally magical 🙂
